Tecno Spark Slim's Kenyan Rollout Looms as Regional Launch Expands

In Kenya, Tecno holds a significant position in the smartphone market, ranking second with a 14.8% share. Samsung leads the market with 28.89%.

Tecno is set to conclude the year with the launch of the Tecno Slim, another intriguing smartphone in its extensive 2025 lineup for Kenya. As its name suggests, the device's primary appeal lies in its slim design. It will rival Tecno's own Pova lineup, specifically the Tecno Pova Slim, with which it shares many specifications, differing only in the chipset.

The Tecno Slim is expected to launch soon in Kenya, following its pre-order availability in Ghana and Uganda. Customers who pre-order the phone in Ghana and Uganda receive a power bank and a limited edition AFCON-themed case.

Design and Display: A Slim Body That Turns Heads

Design

The Tecno Spark Slim's most notable feature is its slim design, measuring 5.953mm thick. Its display is safeguarded by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, while the back is made of fiberglass.

The phone is designed with durability in mind, featuring IP64 dust and water resistance and MIL-STD 810H compliance. A status light LED is conveniently located on the rear cameras. 

Standard physical controls include the volume rocker and power buttons on the sides. For audio and connectivity, a USB-C port, primary speaker grille, and microphone are situated at the bottom, complemented by a secondary speaker at the top.

Display

The device is equipped with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display. This screen delivers a 1.5K resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, and an impressive peak brightness of 4500 nits. Its design also achieves an 89 percent screen-to-body ratio.

For gamers, the 144Hz refresh rate will significantly enhance frame rates. For entertainment, the 15K resolution offers incredibly sharp visuals; however, it lacks support for HDR or Dolby Vision.

Performance and Features: Smooth Enough for Everyday Tasks

Tecno has compromised on performance to reduce costs. The phone is equipped with the Mediatek Helio G200 SoC (6nm), a chipset found in various smartphones like the Infinix Hot 60 Pro, which only supports 4G connectivity.

This phone may not be suitable for avid gamers, as extended play sessions of demanding titles could lead to a decline in performance.

Performance-wise, the Helio G200 shows little improvement over its predecessor, last year's Helio G100. According to Nanoreview benchmarks, the Helio G200 achieved a score of 460,004 on ANTUTU 10, with a single-core score of 738 and a multi-core score of 2011.

The device comes with a single storage configuration of 256GB with 8GB RAM. It appears that the absence of SD card support might be a design choice to maintain the phone's slim profile.

The Tecno Spark Slim will come pre-installed with Android 15, overlaid with HIOS 15. It is anticipated to receive monthly security updates. However, major OS updates are likely limited to one year, a practice Tecno typically reserves for its premium devices..

Camera and Battery: Average Lenses, Impressive Power Backup

The phone features a modest camera setup, including a single 50MP main lens on the rear and a 13MP front-facing camera. Overall, its camera performance is quite average.

The rear camera supports video recording at up to 2K resolution at 30 frames per second, without stabilization. The front-facing camera can record videos at up to 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second, also without stabilization.

Battery

Tecno managed to fit a 5160mAh battery inside this thin profile, which is much better than the Samsung S25 Edge and the iPhone Air. 

For an average user, the battery should comfortably last a full day. However, if you are a heavy user who frequently plays demanding games, you may need to recharge the phone before the day is over.

The Tecno SparkSlim offers versatile charging capabilities. It supports 45W wired charging, enabling a full charge from 0-100% in just 57 minutes. 

Additionally, it features 10W reverse wired charging and bypass charging, which is particularly beneficial during gaming sessions.

Expected Price and Availability in Kenya

While official pricing for the Tecno Spark Slim is still under wraps, our estimates, based on international pricing and currency conversions, suggest the 256GB 8GB RAM base model will likely retail between KES 27,000 and KES 30,000.

Final Thoughts- A Stylish Budget Option For Kenyan Buyers

While the Tecno Spark is a solid phone overall, Tecno opted for a less powerful SoC to maintain a low price point. This decision contrasts with its sibling, the Pova Slim, which features a more robust Mediatek 6400 5G processor.

With a respectable 5160mAh battery, this phone offers a great form factor and display. Its MIL-STD and IP64 ratings also make it a durable choice. This device is an excellent option for many Kenyans, particularly students.

My main reservation is the cameras, which I find mediocre. Specifically, the rear camera setup is limited to a single lens, lacking even an ultrawide option.
