Redmi 15 4G vs Redmi 17 4G: Why the Older Model Might Be Your Smarter Upgrade

Redmi 15 vs Redmi 17 comparison showing the design and camera differences between Xiaomi's two budget smartphones

You’d expect a newer smartphone to come with meaningful upgrades, but that isn’t always the case. Xiaomi’s latest entry is a good example of why it’s worth looking beyond the launch date and checking what has actually changed.

While the recently launched Redmi 17 4G brings refreshed aesthetics, a direct side-by-side comparison reveals several quiet downgrades that make the previous-generation Redmi 15 4G a smarter buy for budget-conscious shoppers.

Smartphones are getting more expensive by the day, and many factors are contributing to that, including the RAM shortage.

Especially here in Kenya, budget phones are also skyrocketing, so the big question is: should you pay a premium for the new generation or grab the discounted predecessor?

Redmi 15 4G vs Redmi 17 4G: The Generational Shift Explained

According to ChinaDaily, Xiaomi has retained its position as the third-largest smartphone brand in Kenya, and this growth is because of the demand for affordable smartphones.

Xiaomi has also partnered with Safaricom, a move that is expected to strengthen its nationwide distribution network while expanding access to device financing through Lipa Mdogo Mdogo and supporting the growth of 5G connectivity in Kenya.

According to Bruno Kimutai, Safaricom’s Operations and Planning Lead, the partnership with Xiaomi aligns with Kenya’s broader digital transformation agenda and is aimed at making smartphones and digital services more accessible to consumers.

Smartphones cut stealth corners during annual refreshes for three main reasons.

Rising core costs: Processors, camera lenses, and AMOLED panels tend to get costlier each year, and in order to maintain the same MSRP and profit margin, brands offset costs on parts that marketing doesn’t highlight.

Spec Sheet Distraction: Brands sell the phone on 2-3 headline specs such as processor speeds and rebranding, main mega pixel countand peak nits, while at the same time they downgrade things like USB speeds, haptic vibration motors, and gimmick auxiliary and macro lenses and chassis materials where plastic is coated to look like metal.

Target Audience Reality: Most buyers typically upgrade every 2-3 years, so they will compare a new phone to a three-year-old device rather than a direct predecessor, making year-over-year upgrade invisible to the consumer.

Display & Build: Crisp Resolution vs. Cost-Saving Panels

The displays on both of these phones are almost the same: both have a 6.9-inch IPS LCD display; the Redmi 15 has a 144Hz refresh rate, and the Redmi 17 has a 120Hz refresh rate. The bezels on the Redmi 17 4G are slightly slimmer.

The displays differ in resolution, with the Redmi 15 having a 1080p panel while the Redmi 17 has been downgraded to a 720p panel.

The other difference is in display protection: the Redmi 15 has Corning Gorilla Glass 3, while the Redmi 17 has been upgraded to Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

The peak brightness on the Redmi 17 is 825 nits, while the one on its predecessor is 850nits, which is a slight downgrade, so outdoor visibility should be about the same.

The build on both phones is pretty much the same: glass front, plastic frames and back, and they also have the same IP 64 dust and water splashes.

Performance & Daily Multitasking: Silicon Benchmarks Under HyperOS

The Redmi 15 comes with the Snapdragon 685, while the Redmi 17 comes with the MediaTek G91 Ultra, and looking at the benchmark results, surprisingly, the Snapdragon 685 outperforms the MediaTek G91 Ultra.

On AnTuTu, the Snapdragon 685 scores 476175, and the MediaTek G91 scores 354158, which is a 34% performance gap; that’s huge.

The Redmi 15 has UFS 2.2, while the Redmi 17, on the other hand, gets the older eMMC 5.1, which, again, is a downgrade. So, for faster data transfers, quick response times, and low power use, the Redmi 15 takes the cake.

On the software side of things, the Redmi 15 launched with Android 15 on top of Hyper OS 3, and it is set to receive two years of OS updates, while the Redmi 17 has launched with Android 16 on top of HyperOS 3 and it set to receive four years of OS updates and 6 years of security patches.

Camera Capabilities: Sensor Changes and Image Processing

On the camera front, there is no upgrade; the cameras are basically the same. They both have a 50MP main camera and an 8MP front selfie camera.

Both the rear and the selfie cameras can record videos up to 1080p at 30 fps.

Photos taken with budget phone cameras tend to do well in well-lit environments and struggle in low-light situations. While we cannot ascertain the camera quality of either of these two phones, they will definitely not blow you away.

Battery Life, Charging Speeds & Long-Term Reliability

The battery on the Redmi 17 is a huge 7,500mAh, while that of its predecessor is a 7,000mAh, and both phones have exceeded the battery industry standard of a 5000mAh, never th eless, the 500mAh increase on the 17 is a welcome upgrade.

Charging speeds have been improved on the Redmi 17 with 45W charging speeds and 22.5W reverse wired charging, up from 33W charging on the 15.

Price-to-Value in the Kenyan Market

The Redmi 15 is currently going for KES 19,499 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB, and the 8GB RAM 256GB goes for KES 21,000 from third-party retailer stores.

On the other hand, the Redmi 17 goes for 4GB RAM + 128GB, which starts at KES 19,399; 4GB RAM + 256GB, which starts at KES 23,799; and 8GB RAM + 256GB, which starts at KES 27,499.

I honestly don’t see any reason to upgrade to the Redmi 17; as a matter of fact, if you are using the Redmi 15, you should stick to it because you will be downgrading if you decide pick the Redmi 17.

The Redmi 15 has better performance, faster storage, and a better display than the Redmi 17.

Target Audience & Practical Takeaways

Buy the Redmi 15 4G if you prioritize sharper media consumption (YouTube, TikTok), faster app loading, and balanced overall hardware performance on a strict budget.

Consider the Redmi 17 4G only if you require an extra year of official Android/HyperOS security patches or if the Redmi 15 is completely out of stock across local retail channels.

Conclusion & Final Verdict

The new generation cuts key corners on the display sharpness, storage performance, and processing efficiency to maintain low retail pricing amid component inflation.

My final verdict is: do not blindly buy the newer model number; just grab the Redmi 15 while stocks last because it stands out as the superior device and the better financial choice.
