Tecno is once again doubling down on affordable tablets with the official rollout of the Tecno MegaPad SE 2, priced at roughly $190 (PHP 11,999- 13,499). But can the entry-level MediaTek Helio G88 processor handle modern multitasking, or is it strictly for streaming and e-learning?

Tecno MegaPad SE 2 Key Specifications and Market Positioning

The TecnoPad SE 2 is a budget-focused 9.7-inch Android tablet powered by the MediaTek Helio G88 chipset, and it is priced at around $190 (11,999/KES 24,500). It packs a 90Hz refresh-rate 2K IPS LCD display with 4GB RAM, up to 256GB of expandable storage, 4G LTE connectivity, and a 7,000mAh battery with 18W charging.

The MegaPad SE 2 is set to succeed last year's Tecno MegaPad SE. The MegaPad SE 2 has a 7.99 mm thickness, weighs 387 grams, and the entire chassis is metallic, giving it a premium feel; it comes in three color options: Deep Grey, Sandy Titanium, and Iris Purple.

Display and Audio: A Media Consumption Machine

The display on this tablet is a sizable 9.7-inch IPS LCD panel with a 2k resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, and 550 nits of peak brightness, which will be mainly suitable to be used indoors.

The tablet is also TÜV Rheinland certified for low blue light for those with sensitive eyes at night.

It also has an acoustic setup featuring dual stereo speakers tuned by DTS Audio, so you can expect some immersive audio coming out of this tablet.

There is also the good old 3.5mm headphone jack, which is very rare to see nowadays.

For those who love entertainment, this tablet is Widevine L1 certified for Netflix and YouTube. To put this in simple terms, that means that the device has the highest level of hardware-based security required by Netflix to stream video in HD.

Performance, Software, and AI Features: What Can Helio G88 Deliver?

This tablet is equipped with an octa-core MediaTek Helio G88 SoC paired with 4GB RAM and up to 256GB of storage. This tablet should handle media playback, e-learning, web navigation, and some light productivity smoothly.

Keep in mind that this tablet is not built for 3D gaming; HIOS 16, on the other hand, introduces dedicated educational tools and AI utilities that are tailored for student productivity.

The MediaTek G88 is a pretty old chipset launched back in 2021; it’s a 12nm chip, so it can be less efficient when it comes to everyday tasks compared to chipsets that have much smaller architectures.

The 4GB RAM will drag this tablet down. Tecno advertises it as having 8GB RAM, but the extra 4GB RAM is extended RAM. The main storage is 256GB, and it can be expanded up to 1TB via an SD card slot.

Moving on to the software side of things, the device has launched with Android 16 on top of Tecno’s own HIOS 16, with a bunch of AI tools such as AI image generation, photo-based problem-solving with just a snap of a photo, Ella AI delivers the solution instantly an AI translation.

There is also a built-in tutor which Tecno claims can be your child's personal study assistant, and Tecno has also included up to 1100+ free learning resources.

Tecno hasn’t stated how many years of software updates this tablet is going to get, but my best guess is that it might get only one year of major OS updates and maybe 2-3 years of security patches.

Battery Life, Connectivity, and Everyday Usability

Powering the device is a 7000mAh battery, which Tecno claims delivers 9 hours of video playback, 8+ hours of gaming, and 147 hours of music playback at default volume.

The battery should last you through an entire day based on your usage, given that it only has an IPS LCD display and a slightly lower 90Hz refresh rate.

The Tecno Tab SE 2 has a standalone 4G LTE SIM slot for cellular data and voice/sms functionality outside WI-FI coverage.

On the cameras, there is an 8MP rear and front camera which are optimised for Zoom meetings and document scanning, as we have come to expect from budget tablets.
