Xiaomi recently announced the Redmi A3 which is a budget smartphone offering some good enough features in 2024 at a lower cost which is proof that you don’t need to break the bank for a great smartphone experience and it is expected to launch in Kenya on April 4th of this month.

The Xiaomi A3 Proof That You Don’t Need to Sacrifice Style for Affordability.

The phone boasts a design that closely resembles the more expensive Xiaomi 14 series, with the camera module being the only notable similarity. At the rear, there is a circular camera array that houses two camera lenses and a flashlight. The back of the phone is made of plastic, but the glossy finish gives it the appearance of glass, especially from a distance.

The right side of the phone features the power button, which now includes a fingerprint scanner. This is an upgrade from the previous A2 model, where the fingerprint scanner was located on the back.

Additionally, there are two volume rockers on the right side. On the left side of the phone, there is a SIM ejector tool that accommodates two SIM cards and a microSD card with a capacity of up to 1 TB.

Turning the phone over you are reminded that the phone is a budget phone, it has thick bezels and an old tear-drop, and at the bottom, you get a TYPE-C charging port which is a huge bump up since its predecessor had a micro USB, a speaker, and a microphone.

The display is an IPS LCD coupled with a 90Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and 500 nits of brightness. It has a corning gorilla glass three for protection against accidental scratches and drops. The display measures 6.71 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 720*1650 which is okay for such a budget smartphone.

Xiaomi had to compromise on the processor, as the phone comes with a 6-year-old Mediatek Helio P35, which is even a downgrade compared to last year's A2 with the Helio G36.

It employs MIUI, but it looks more similar to stock Android, possibly to ensure smoother performance. To achieve a simple and lightweight feel, the company has cut down on various features. The software is running on Android 14 Go edition.

Onboard storage options include 64GB with 3GB of RAM, 128GB with 4GB of RAM, and 128GB with 6GB of RAM. If I had to choose, I would opt for the 4GB of RAM or higher. However, it's important to note that the phone has slower eMMC flash storage, so don't expect blazing-fast read and write speeds.

It comes packed with a huge 5000mAh battery which should last you a full day or two depending on your usage also considering the screen is 720p and doesn’t have a lot of MIUI features that might drain your battery

Xiaomi A3’s Camera - Captures Life’s Moments Without Breaking the Bank.

For the camera, the phone has two cameras at the back, an 8 MP main shooter, and a 0.08 auxiliary gimmicky lens. As long as your expectations are low, the camera quality should be fine, in some reviews, I have watched the cameras take good photos but the images captured shouldn’t blow your mind away. It can shoot video up to 1080p 30 fps with no form of stabilization which is satisfactory at best.

At the front, we get a pretty basic 5MP lens that can record videos up to 1080 30 fps. Both the rear and the front cameras can only take good photos and record nice videos under good light conditions. You don’t want to buy this phone for the cameras.

Near Stock Android Power - Xiaomi A3 Delivers a Clean Experience.

The phone's UI deviates from the MIUI, resembling a more straightforward and minimalistic stock Android appearance. Though you may miss the control center provided by MIUI, certain features have been eliminated, potentially to enhance the phone's performance.

One downside of the phone's software is the presence of bloatware apps, which can occupy significant storage space and potentially slow down the device's performance. Fortunately, these pre-installed applications can be uninstalled or disabled, allowing users to customize their phone's software and improve its overall functionality.

The Xiaomi A3 - Your Wallet Will Thank You, Launch date April 4th.

The Redmi A3 comes at a very affordable price. We expect the phone to retail between KES.12,500-14,200 depending on the storage configuration.

The Xiaomi phone will be available for purchase at selected Xiaomi stores, resellers, and online shops like Jumia, Masoko, and Kilimall.

The Perfect Phone for Practical Users - Is the Xiaomi A3 Right for You?

The Redmi A3 is specifically designed for those who prioritize basic phone functions. It's an ideal choice for users whose main requirements are receiving and making calls, sending and receiving emails, and engaging with social media.
