Oppo A6 Pro Global Launch: Downgraded Specs Leave Fans Disappointed

Just a month after the much-anticipated global launch of the Oppo A6 Pro, the international version has finally made its debut. However, fans hoping for an upgrade may find themselves underwhelmed, as the global variant leaves much to be desired.

Oppo A6 Pro Specifications Overview

Display Type and refresh rate

The Oppo A6 Pro Global boasts an impressive 6.57-inch AMOLED display that offers stunning visuals with a sharp resolution of 1080 by 2372 pixels. Plus, with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, every swipe and scroll will feel fluid.

The display has a peak brightness of 1,400 nits, ensuring visibility even in direct sunlight. It is protected by AGC DT-Star D+, a glass that is lightweight, scratch-resistant, and strong, specifically designed for electronic devices

This display will showcase vibrant and bright colors, thanks to its AMOLED screen with 1 billion colors, delivering more realistic and accurate images by enhancing color depth.

The display of the Oppo A6 pro also houses the optical under-display fingerprint scanner.

Oppo A6 Pro Processor and Performance

The processor of the global version has been replaced with the Mediatek Dimensity 6300 (6nm) from the 7300 (4nm) of the global version.

This is a significant downgrade because the Dimensity 6300 does not support Wi-Fi 6 and 4 K recording.

Comparing the two processors side by side, the global version has an Antutu score of 668790 vs 425577, which is a 57 percent margin.

The global version of the device is certainly a reliable companion for everyday tasks, whether you're gaming, scrolling through social media, or juggling multiple apps. However, it does fall short when compared to the powerhouse that is the Chinese version.

The Chinese version has four storage configurations: 256GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 12GB RAM, 256GB 16GB RAM, 512 GB 16GB RAM, while the global version has 256GB 12GB RAM, and the RAM can also be expanded with smart RAM expansion.

Camera Setup

The camera on the global variant is a 50MP main camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

When it comes to photography, the main camera will truly shine with its functionality, while the depth sensor feels more like an afterthought than a game-changer.

The rear camera can record video up to 1080p 120fps, while the 16MP selfie camera can record videos up to 1080p 30fps.

Oppo A6 Pro Battery and Charging

Switching to the battery side of things, Oppo will launch the phone with 7000mAh and 6500mAh, depending on the market region.

It might have 80W fast charging, and Oppo claims 1%-50% in 26 minutes, a full charge can take 60 minutes, and the company also claims 31 days of battery standby.

It also supports reverse wired charging, ideal for topping up devices such as earbuds or providing a quick boost to other devices at 13.5 W.

Software version

This phone is set to debut with the latest Android 15, paired with colourOS 15 right out of the box. While the exact duration of software updates remains a bit of a mystery, we can anticipate that, being a midrange device, it will offer a solid level of support in the near future.

Still on the software, the phone has a Trinity engine, which enhances performance, dynamic visual and and system-level optimisations.

There is also a luminous rendering engine, which boosts animation fluidity and responsiveness, delivering a more fluid visual experience.

There are a couple of AI features, such as AI Assist for documents, AI Assist for notes, and AI eraser 2.0 for removing people, objects, or reflections in photos

Major Downgrades Compared to the Chinese Version

Chipset Downgrade: Oppo A6 Pro Global Version Uses a Weaker MediaTek Processor

The Chinese variant boasts the powerful Mediatek Dimensity 7300 chip, while the global edition comes equipped with the slightly less robust 6300 SoC. This difference could significantly affect gaming performance, with the 7300 potentially delivering a more immersive and smoother experience.

Storage and RAM Variants: Reduced Configurations

The Chinese model offers storage options of up to 512GB and 16GB of RAM, whereas the international version is limited to a maximum of 256GB storage and 12GB of RAM, utilizing UFS 3.1 for the Chinese variant and UFS 2.2 for the global one.

Camera Downgrade: Resolution

The Chinese version can record videos in 4K resolution at 30, 60, or 120 fps. It also features OIS, a color spectrum sensor, gyro-EIS, and AI ID photo.

The global version allows video shooting at 1080p up to 30, 60, or 120 fps; it does not support 4K. Some shooting modes, stabilization features, and pro options have been adjusted.

Connectivity Changes: Wi-Fi and Network Support

The global variant has WI-FI 5 connectivity, while the Chinese version has WI-FI 6 connectivity 802.11a/b/g/ac/ax; both smartphones support 5G network.

WI-FI 6 is a major upgrade over WI-FI 5, focusing on efficiency and performance in modern device-dense environments rather than just raw speed.

Charging Speed Reduction

In China, they get the 7000mAh battery; the global version might get the 7000mAh or 6500mAh version, depending on the market. The battery is also silicon-carbon for both markets.

Charging speed might be reduced or remain the same at 80W to meet EU thermal and safety regulations.

Oppo A6 Pro Price and Availability

The phone launched in Asian markets in late September. In Singapore, the phone goes for $399, which equates to KES 51,00,0, and in Malaysia, it is 1,199 RMB, which equates to KES 37,000.

Considering Oppo’s previous launch series, the A series, it is expected that this phone will be released in Kenya within the next few months, with a price range of approximately KES 30,000-35,000.

Expert Opinion: Should You Buy the Oppo A6 Pro?

The A6 Pro is a great midrange smartphone, especially popular in Kenya, where the budget smartphone market is very competitive. If you want a phone that offers strong performance and good value, the A6 Pro is a choice you shouldn't miss.

However, I can't help but feel that Oppo missed an opportunity by toning down the specifications, particularly the processor. If they had kept it at a higher level, it could have made a significant impact in the Kenyan market

The OPPO A6 Pro will compete with other better alternatives like the Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G and the Samsung A36 5G.
