Tecno MegaPad SE with Snapdragon 680 Spotted: Kenya Next?
The Tecno MegaPad SE, a new budget tablet from Tecno, has been launched in Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda, with a potential future release in the Kenyan market.
The MegaPad boasts several key features, including a Snapdragon 680 (6nm) chipset, a full HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and immersive audio provided by Dolby Atmos Quad speakers.
Key Specifications
Performance - What Snapdragon 680 Means for Users
The MegaPad SE's internal hardware is disappointingly weak, featuring a five-year-old Snapdragon 680 chipset. Tecno would have been much better served by opting for the Mediatek Helio G100 or G200, as both significantly outperform the Snapdragon 680 in performance benchmarks.
The Snapdragon 680 is well-suited for lighter tasks, including web browsing, video conferencing, and casual gaming. However, the MegaPad is not designed to handle demanding activities or heavy gaming, and users should avoid installing such titles as performance will likely suffer.
Design and Display - FHD+ resolution for Better Multimedia
Design
The MegaPad SE boasts an ultra-slim 7mm, all-metal body and features quad speakers. This design not only provides durability but also ensures exceptional comfort, even during extended use.
The device's front is dominated by an 11-inch display, which has noticeable bezels, resulting in an 83% screen-to-body ratio. The rear panel features a design that stylistically resembles the iPhone 13, including what appears to be a dual-camera setup. However, it actually houses a single 8MP main camera, and for selfies and video calls, the device is equipped with a 5MP front-facing camera.
Display
For entertainment purposes like watching movies, this tablet is well-suited, thanks to its 11-inch FHD+ display and Dolby Atmos quad speakers, which deliver loud and punchy sound. However, advanced features such as HDR 10+ or Dolby Vision are not included.
The 90Hz refresh rate enhances scrolling and multitasking smoothness, and this rate is the maximum supported by the Snapdragon 680 processor.
The Tecno MegaPad SE's peak brightness of just 440 nits significantly hinders its outdoor usability. Due to this low brightness, the tablet is optimally suited for indoor environments, as visibility will be severely compromised when attempting to use it in bright sunlight, particularly in locations like Kenya.
RAM and Storage
The MegaPad SE offers generous storage options, featuring up to 256GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. The RAM capacity can be virtually doubled to 16GB thanks to memory fusion technology, which adds an extra 8 GB. Furthermore, users can expand the storage significantly with an SD card, allowing for an additional 512GB.
Battery and Software (HIOS/Android version)
The software on the Megapad SE is currently unknown, but it is anticipated to be Android 15 with a HIOS 15 skin.
The tablet's 8000mAh battery is smaller than those found in some other tablets. It is paired with a slow 18W charger, which is included inside the box.
The company estimates the battery life to be 15 hours of video playback and 148 hours of music playback, which may be achievable given the power-efficient processor.
AI Features
Like all tablets released this year, the MegaPad SE is equipped with a suite of AI capabilities. These features include the Ella voice assistant, designed to effortlessly answer queries and adapt to user needs. Furthermore, the tablet offers AI writing assistance, document calibration, and advanced tools for proofreading and professional editing.
AI capabilities also include various translation functions, such as translating text within photos, social media content, and real-time face-to-face conversations.
Furthermore, there is an AI drawing board for image generation, a feature for picture-to-picture answer learning, image-to-document conversion, and the Ella smart touch system.
Expected Price in Kenya
The Tecno MegaPad SE is anticipated to launch in Kenya with a retail price of approximately KES 23,000, which is roughly equivalent to $180. I will provide a price update as soon as Tecno releases the complete official pricing.
Will Tecno Bring the MegaPad to Kenya?
Considering the tablet's launch in key markets like Nigeria, Uganda, and Ghana, its imminent unveiling in Kenya is anticipated. This expectation is driven by Kenya's significant tablet market and the strong demand from the education sector.
Final Thoughts - Should You Wait for the MegaPad SE?
The Tecno MegaPad SE is designed for students and is not intended for demanding tasks, such as playing high-end, triple-A video games.
The System-on-a-Chip (SoC) is a major letdown, featuring the Snapdragon 680—a 5-year-old chipset. A component this outdated should not be present in any device in 2025, but it appears to be a concession made for a budget-friendly tablet.
The aluminium chassis provides a good overall design. Additionally, the cameras perform excellently for document scanning and Zoom meetings.
