Google has started testing the first Android 17 (API level 37) beta, marking the first public testing phase for developers and early adopters.

As Android 17 prepares to roll out on select Xiaomi devices, some Redmi and Poco devices are set to miss out on this major update.

This article will help Xiaomi users plan for their future by identifying devices that will likely stop at Android 16.

Understanding the "Support Window"

If there is something I have learned covering Xiaomi phones, it is that not all devices are treated equally when it comes to software updates.

Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco each follow a different update timeline, and it mostly depends on the phone's price and positioning. Flagship Xiaomi devices usually get the best treatment with 4-5 years of updates, while Redmi and Poco devices typically get 2-4 years of OS updates.

Budget phones, which are very popular here because of their pricing oftenly receive the shortest support. It’s not really a bad thing, but that’s how Xiaomi keeps its pricing competitive, and this means that buyers should think beyond specs and also consider how long their phones will stay up to date.

The list of smartphones that will not support Android 17 is based entirely on the number of promised software updates from the device's launch date, and not the official listing from Xiaomi.

Why Android 17 Matters (and Why These Missed It)

What most people don’t realise is that every Android version quietly raises the hardware requirements. New features like advanced hardware processing, stronger security protections, and more advanced protection and more advanced animations all need more advanced CPUs and more RAM to run smoothly.

Another key limitation is the kernel itself, the core layer that connects Android to the hardware. New Android versions like Android 17 rely on newer kernel requirements, and many midrange chips from a few years ago simply weren’t designed for that level of support. This is why phones that launched with entry-level processors like the Helio G series or older Snapdragon 600-series tend to fall behind after two or three years, not because they suddenly stop working, but because the underlying hardware and kernel support can’t keep up with modern Android demands.

However, it’s not that the phone suddenly becomes useless; it’s just that the new software is built for newer, more powerful hardware in mind.

If you have noticed that two big devices that will likely not get Android 17, the Poco X6 5G and the Newly launched Redmi Note 14 5G, which have very capable hardware to support Android 17 and even future OS updates, but why are they in the list? My theory is that these devices don’t really sell well globally, hence Xiaomi doesn’t dedicate a lot of manpower and resources to support them for a long time.

From a manufacturer's perspective, pushing a heavy Android update to weaker hardware can actually ruin the user experience, which is why budget devices are usually the first to be left out.

What Should Affected Users Do?

If you missed the next generation of updates, you will still receive limited security software updates, which are the most important updates to pay attention to.

If you want the latest Android 17 on a Xiaomi device, look for newer Midrange or flagship which offer extended support windows.

Conclusion

While these 11+ device reach their EOL support, they are still very capable of running your day-to-day tasks with ease and even play games; all you will be missing out on are the new features that come with the next generation of Android. However Xiaomi might puhsh it's next generation of HyperOS to these devices, fingers crossed for that.
