Why Your Airtel ODU Isn’t Hitting Promised Speeds — And How to Fix It

White Airtel 5G smart connect outdoor unit (ODU) mounted on a metal balcony grille, highlighting the hardware used when troubleshooting and fixing Airtel ODU slow internet speeds.

You just paid for an affordable Airtel Home internet package, but your speeds look like it belongs in 2010, very slow and sluggish.

Before you spend an hour on hold with customer care, the culprit might just be a single setting inside Airtel’s router settings.

I have been using the Airtel ODU for three months now, and my experience with the router has been good

There have been a lot of complaints on social media regarding this ODU unit, some claiming that the speeds decline in the evening, and that might actually be true.

The core solution to fixing the ODU speeds is by changing the network modes in the Airtel dashboard. For example, if you are using 4G and the network is sluggish, switch to 5G and the network should be good.

Why Your Airtel ODU Slow Internet is Driving You Crazy

The AIrtel ODU which is part of Airtel 5G smart connect package is a weather resistant externally mounted device that boosts 5G/4G signals for home and office signals for home and office internet.

The Airtel ODU, which is a high-gain antenna, is installed in homes, offices, and even matatus here in Kenya. The ODU receives cellular signal directly from towers and passes them via an Ethernet cable to an Indoor router.

Most ISPs love to sell the dream, but don’t always keep up with it. You sign up for a 30Mbps package from a well-known provider, and in the first week, everything feels perfect. You get fast speeds, smooth streaming, and no complaints.

Then slowly, things start going downhill, and videos begin to buffer, YouTube struggles to load, and you’re left wondering what changed. It’s frustrating, and honestly, this is exactly the kind of experience many Airtel users are dealing with right now.

5G routers, and this includes both Airtel and Safaricom 5G routers, have a tendency to constantly search for the best signal, which can ironically ruin the experience.

The Culprit: Why "Auto Mode" is Ruining Your Connection

The Airtel ODU router comes with the default setting set to 'Auto' network mode.

This 'Auto' mode switches between 3G only, 4G only, 4G/3G, and 5G Non-standalone only depending on the wind, weather, or slight network congestion.

This constant switching is what really messes things up, as it leads to serious packet loss, higher latency, and painfully slow download speeds.

You’ll notice it when the ODU locks onto a solid 5G signal, and everything feels fast and stable, then suddenly, something as minor as a weather shift kicks it down to 4G or even 3G. From there, performance just falls apart.

Metric "Auto" Network Mode (Default) "Locked" Mode (4G/5G Only)
Connection Stability Poor (Constantly switching bands) Excellent (Stays on one band)
Latency / Ping High (Causes lag in gaming/calls) Low & Stable
Peak Speeds Fluctuates heavily Consistent with your paid plan
Best For Moving vehicles / Mobile phones Fixed home internet (ODUs)

How to Fix Airtel ODU Speeds: The Network Mode Hack

Step 1: Log in to Your Airtel Admin Panel

Start by logging into your router at 192.168.1.1. The default login details are usually admin for both username and password. You’ll find them printed on a sticker at the back of the router. If you can, do this on a laptop because it’s just easier to navigate the settings compared to a phone.

Step 2: Navigate to Network Settings

Once you’re in, head over to the Network section, and you’ll notice the network mode is set to Auto by default, which is what causes all that unnecessary switching.

Step 3: Lock Your Preferred Network Mode

Click on the drop-down menu and try locking it to a specific mode, like 5G or 4G, and see which one gives you the most stable performance, and remember to click on save.

After that, make sure your device matches the router’s settings. So if you’ve locked the router to 5G, connect your laptop (or phone) to the 5G Wi-Fi band. Same thing if you settle on 4G, just keep everything aligned for the best results.

Other Quick Fixes for Your Airtel Outdoor Unit

Ensure that the Ethernet cable running from the ODU outside to the POE (Power over Ethernet) indoor unit is not damaged or pinched in a window.

Also, the ODU needs a clear line of sight to the nearest Airtel mast, and the trees or buildings blocking the way will drop the speeds, so if possible, try adjusting the ODU or contact Airtel customer care so they can send a technician to do the adjustments for you.

Conclusion

- The problem is the Auto mode

- The Fix is logging into the IP address

- Lock it to 3G/4G/5G only.

When you have installed the Airtel ODU, it is not always fully optimised out of the box; always run speed tests before and after the fix.
