Honor Finally Lands in Kenya with the Honor X9d — A Real Threat or Just Noise?
Honor, which used to be a sub-brand of Huawei, was acquired in late 2020, and the company has since stepped out of Huawei's shadow. and the company is making a highly anticipated independent push into the Kenyan market.
But the mid-range space is crowded with aggressive contenders, the likes of Xiaomi, Tecno, Infinix, and Samsung. The big question remains: Does the new Honor X9d debut pack enough punch?
Honor Officially Lands in Kenya: Why the Honor X9 Matters
Honors' entry into the Kenyan market is a strategic move and a bit overdue. After splitting from Huawei, the company has spent a few years rebuilding its identity, securing Google services, and quietly positioning itself as a serious global competitor again.
The launch of the Honor X9d isn’t accidental; it’s a calculated play as it echoes the old Huawei Y series strategy like the Y9s: stylish, premium-looking hardware aimed squarely at budget-conscious buyers, and in Kenya, that makes perfect sense. The market is driven by the mid-range segment, where people want flagship vibes without paying flagship prices.

Do you know why the Samsung Galaxy A series, Xiaomi Redmi Note phones, and Tecno phones dominate the market? You might have guessed it, but it's because buyers are looking for premium-looking devices without the flagship prices.
Honor X9d 5G Specs & Price in Kenya: The "Unbreakable" Heavyweight
The Honor X9d is the star of the show, which packs in some serious flagship specs, and I would consider it one of the best rugged yet sleek devices for power users.
A Battery That Refuses to Die (8300mAh)
The Honor x9d packs a humongous 8300mAh silicon-carbon battery, which is the biggest battery capacity I have come across at this price point.
Under moderate use, the battery should be able to last you 2-3 days of usage, as a matter of fact, a tech creator called Techish tried to drain the battery of the Honor x9d, but he went on with it up to the third day, at which point the phone was at 26%, which is pretty damn impressive, right?
On top of that, there is a 66W fast charger and 7,5w reverse wired charging.
This phone can survive upcountry with ease without the need for a power bank, and it even flexes its muscles by charging other devices.
IP69K Durability Meets a 120Hz AMOLED Display
The Honor X9d is IP69K water and dust-tight, which means that the phone has undergone vigorous testing, such as close-distance water jets and very hot water.
The phone can also be used while the display is still wet, and it will be responsive and smooth, and you can also operate the phone while wearing gloves.
The display of this phone is a 6.79-inch 1.5k AMOLED display paired with a fast 120Hz refresh rate, PWM of 3840Hz for those with sensitive eyes, and a blinding brightness of up to 6000 nits. That’s a lot of brightness there.
The display is protected by Aluminosilicate glass, which is a high-performance chemically strengthened glass.
Honor claims that the phone can survive drops up to 2 metres with 6 cushioning layers, which might give users the free will of not use a tampered screen protector, but as the saying goes, glass is glass and glass breaks, and better safe than sorry. If I were you, I would apply a screen protector.
The 108MP AI Camera Setup
Switching gears to the camera setup, the phone has a 108MP main camera with OIS and a 5MP ultrawide lens.
Having a higher megapixel is good, but it doesn’t mean that the phone will take nice shots. The good is that the phone can record videos in up to 4k 30fps on the main camera, the Ultrawide cannot record in 4k since it’s only a 5MP lens.
The front-facing camera is a 16MP snapper and can only record videos in up to 1080p 30fps.
Performance & Software: Is the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 Fast Enough?
The Honor X9d is powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, which is a midrange chipset.
Honor has added an advanced ice cooling system, which, according to Honor, has increased Graphite Thermal Conductivity by 90%. Honor also claims 29% boost in GPU power and 11% boost in performance due to the optimisation with AI system-level resource management for better performance.
That, paired with up to 512GB and 12GB of RAM, will ensure that multitasking is smooth with no lag while navigating through the operating system.
Speaking of the operating system, the phone comes with Android 15, and skinned on top is Honor’s own Magic OS 9. Honor has promised two years of OS updates and three years of security updates, which is not the best out there. At this price point, we should be getting at least 4 years of OS updates, honestly.
Conclusion (The Final Verdict)
The Honor x9d is a unique phone that goes for KES 50,000, and my favourite features are that huge 8300mAh battery, military-grade durability, and the impressive flagship display, which I think will be the main selling point to many people.
If you are a moderate to heavy user, content consumer, and a professional working outdoors, and you prioritize battery and durability over playing heavy mobile games at max graphics, then the Honor x9d is the phone for you.
