Recently the brand unveiled the Oppo A60 in Kenya aimed at budget-conscious consumers who don’t want to spend big on buying an Oppo smartphone.
This comes a few weeks after launching the Oppo Reno 11F which is an upper midrange smartphone. Let’s dive straight into it and see what the Oppo A60 has in store for us.
Key Features of the Oppo A60
Design and Build
The design of the A60 is well-built. First off it features IP 54 protection against dust particles and water splashes but don’t take it for a swim though. Oppo claims that the phone has military-grade shock resistance preventing your phone from being damaged from accidental drops.
The device is also very slim, measuring 7.68mm. It should easily fit into your tight jeans pocket with no trouble. On the right side, you'll find the usual volume rocker buttons and the power button, which also functions as the fingerprint scanner.
Display
The display of the Oppo A60 isn't something to go by for a midrange device, it measures 6.67 inches diagonally. The display is an IPS LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate making scrolling and opening of apps feel snappy.
Unfortunately, the display measures a resolution of 720 by 1604, so don’t expect those sharp visuals while streaming content.
On the bright side, the Oppo A60 has a peak brightness of 950 nits which is above average, ideal for using the phone under direct sunlight or in bright conditions.
I have seen images of the phone and it has slim bezels all around apart from the chin where the bezels are thick.
Processor
Under the hood, the phone packs a fairly decent snapdragon 680 chipset, a 6nm for efficiency and power conservation. We have seen this chip on other smartphones such as the Redmi Note 12.
The A60 should perform well with this processor, although it might struggle when playing demanding titles. However, for basic use such as social media, web browsing, calling, and reading emails, it shouldn't be an issue.
The Oppo A60 has scored 413 points in single-core and 1,438 in multi-core tests, which is not the highest out there, but it’s pretty decent.
Camera
On the camera side of things, the phone packs a 50MP main shooter and a 2MP depth. Oppo is known to offer very good camera performance if not the best, we expect good photos with this budget blower.
The selfie is only an 8MP shooter, it’s what we would expect from a budget smartphone. It should take good photos in good lighting conditions.
Both the rear and the selfie camera can only shoot videos at 1080p 30fps, so yeah, no 4K here.
Software and User Experience
Out of the box, the A60 comes with Android 14 with Oppo’s colorOS 14 slapped on top of it.
Oppo’s user experience is known for its user-friendly interface, featuring smooth swipes and animations, particularly when opening and closing apps and scrolling through content.
Oppo has not stated whether the A60 will receive future software as an assurance of longevity, however, we can expect at least 1 year of major OS keep in mind that is not a guarantee.
RAM and Storage
On board the storage the phone comes with 8GB RAM and a huge 256GB of storage enough to store your photos and videos without getting full.
You can expand the RAM using the RAM expansion feature, which borrows unused space as memory and if you run out of storage, you can expand it using an SD card.
Battery
The Oppo A60 features a 5000mAh battery that can last an entire day, depending on your usage. If you're a heavy user and your battery drains quickly, Oppo has included a 45W SuperVOOC charger.
According to Oppo, this charger can charge the phone from 0-50% in 30 minutes. Additionally, Oppo claims the phone can provide 14.75 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of phone calls.
This can be geared by the lower screen resolution and the efficient Snapdragon 680 chipset.
Nifty picks
The Oppo A60 features stereo speakers for an immersive sound experience, especially when playing games. Most of the time, you might block the bottom and the sound becomes muffled, but that will not be the case with the A60.
It also features a 360-degree NFC for unlocking the car door or accessing the work pass by swiping. Oppo claims you can use the back, front, and top frame to access and use cards in your digital wallet.
Potential Drawbacks
I'm not a fan of the Oppo A60's IPS LCD display. I believe that there are other smartphones available in a similar price range that come with AMOLED panels and even brighter displays. For example, the base Redmi Note 13 has a peak brightness of 1800 nits.
Oppo has also not provided a timeline for when the A60 will receive software updates. Therefore, if you are purchasing this phone, there is no guarantee that it will receive future software updates.
Pricing and Availability
The Oppo A60 is available for KES 30,000 and will be available in all Oppo retail stores. It comes in two colors Ripple blue and Midnight Purple.
Conclusion
Is it worth buying the Oppo A60? Well, it depends on your needs. If you mainly use your phone for basic tasks like social media, emails, calls, and casual photography, then this budget phone will serve you well.
However, if you are into heavy gaming and you are a person who is constantly on your phone then I advise you to look elsewhere. Overall the Oppo A60 is a good phone apart from the caveats I have mentioned.
