Instagram Is Wrongly Suspending Accounts: What to Do If It Happens to You

Over the past couple of days, I have received two panic calls from two ladies who claimed that their Instagram accounts had been suspended.

As their social media manager, I was responsible for making sure their accounts complied with Meta’s Community Guidelines and were protected from hackers.

We appealed, and the accounts were reinstated, which means the accounts had been suspended by mistake.

Why is Your Instagram Account Suspended by Mistake?

For years, Meta has relied on a mix of automated filters and thousands of human reviewers to monitor accounts for harmful content.

However, in recent months, the tech giant has said it will begin using AI to handle work previously done by thousands of human moderators. The concern is that AI can miss important context and may be too quick to flag content.

The use of AI to act as moderators is what is causing the surge in accounts being suspended by mistake, while at the same time actual spam accounts continue to operate.

The Most Common False Positive Triggers

Most people I know have always been using third-party apps that offer likes and followers.

Most of these apps offer likes and followers in exchange for your login details, which might lead to your account being flagged because these services are not affiliated with Instagram.

Once these apps gain access to your account, they may take control of it and use it however they want, even in ways that violate Instagram’s Community Guidelines.

How to Appeal a Disabled Instagram Account

If you believe that your Instagram account has been disabled by mistake, you can appeal the decision by inputting your name and password; you will see a message that says “We suspended your account, xxx”.

At the bottom, you will see an appeal button; tap it to submit an appeal.

The two disabled accounts were reinstated in less than 10 minutes because they had not violated any community guidelines.

Once your account is reinstated, you will see a message that says “You’re back on Instagram,” and Instagram will apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Escalation Tactics If the In-App Appeal Fails

The Meta Verified Route

If you have another account, I suggest verifying the account; for many Kenyans, it is usually free for the first month. Once you verify the account to access the live support chat.

Keep in mind that the agent can only act within the limits set by the policy team. It’s effective for clear false positives, but it can’t overturn legitimate Community Guidelines violations.

Securing Your Profile From Future Meta AI Bans

To avoid future bans, it is important to secure your profile. Start by revoking access to all third-party apps the second you get your account back.

Also, navigate to Settings and Activity, tap Accounts Centre, tap on Password and security, then tap on verification selfie, select your account, and follow the on-screen instructions to submit a video selfie where the platform can quickly confirm that you are the legitimate account owner and restore your access.

Conclusion

When you see a suspension message, don’t panic; follow the instructions that we have talked about in this article, and in minutes your account will be reinstated.

Submit one appeal with your video selfie and wait patiently for Instagram to review your account; once reviewed, immediately sever ties with any follower tracking apps and also go to Account Status to see if your account has any issues.
